What "landscaping" actually means - and why it matters

Landscaping covers everything that turns a bare or tired garden into a space you actually want to use. That might be as simple as a new lawn and some planting, or as involved as a full redesign with a patio, raised beds, a garden room, fencing and all-new planting. The common thread is transforming outdoor space from something you look at with mild irritation into something you are genuinely glad to have.

This guide covers the main landscaping options available, how to think about your garden as a whole, what realistic timelines and budgets look like, and how to find someone who will do the job properly.

Hard landscaping vs soft landscaping

You will hear these two terms used a lot. Hard landscaping refers to the built elements: patios, paths, driveways, steps, retaining walls, fencing, drainage. Soft landscaping refers to the living elements: lawns, planting, hedges, trees, raised beds. A good garden project usually involves a mix of both.

In practice, hard landscaping tends to come first because it defines the structure and levels of the garden, and you do not want to be digging and laying stone across a newly turfed lawn. The soft landscaping fills in and softens the hard structure.

The main landscaping services

New lawns and turfing

A fresh lawn makes an immediate and dramatic difference to a garden. The key is preparation: a new turf laid on compacted, uneven or nutrient-poor ground will struggle to establish and will look tired within a season. Done properly - with the old lawn or weeds removed, the ground cultivated, levels corrected, good topsoil added where needed, and quality turf laid and watered in - a new lawn can look established within six weeks.

Seeding is cheaper than turfing but takes longer to establish (typically three to four months for a usable lawn) and is more vulnerable to birds, drought and heavy rain early on. For most homeowners who want results within a season, turf is the right choice.

Decking

Decking extends your usable outdoor space, particularly useful where a patio is not practical due to ground levels, or where you want to create a raised platform to make the most of a view or afternoon sun. Composite decking (made from recycled wood and plastic fibres) has largely replaced treated softwood for good reason: it does not splinter, does not need staining or treating, and will not rot. It costs more upfront but the long-term saving in maintenance makes it the better investment for most people.

A deck built over 30cm off the ground or over 15m2 in area may require planning permission. A good contractor will check this for you before work starts.

Raised beds and garden walls

Raised beds transform a flat garden by adding height and structure, making planting more accessible and giving you control over your growing medium. They work beautifully in both kitchen gardens and ornamental settings. Timber sleepers (new or reclaimed), brick, stone and rendered blockwork are all options depending on the style you are going for.

Retaining walls do the same structural job where there is a level change in the garden to manage. They need to be built properly with adequate drainage behind them - a wall holding soil without drainage behind it will eventually crack or lean as water builds up and freezes.

Garden rooms and studios

A garden room - a properly insulated, electrified timber building in your garden - has become one of the most popular home improvement projects in Surrey. It gives you a dedicated workspace, gym, studio or leisure room without the disruption, cost and planning headaches of a house extension. Most single-storey garden rooms within standard size limits are permitted development.

The difference between a quality garden room and a glorified shed is insulation, ventilation and the electrical fit-out. A room with proper insulated walls, floor and roof, double-glazed doors and windows, and a full electrical installation (not just an extension lead from the house) is genuinely usable year-round. That is what we build.

Soakaways and drainage

Poor drainage makes a garden miserable to use and can cause real damage to your property over time. Waterlogged lawns, flooded patios and water tracking towards house foundations are all solvable with the right drainage works. A soakaway is simply a pit filled with rubble or proprietary drainage crates that collects surface water and allows it to disperse slowly into the surrounding soil. French drains (perforated pipe in a gravel trench) carry water away from problem areas to a soakaway or a suitable discharge point.

Drainage works are best carried out at the same time as other landscaping because they often run under areas that will later be paved or turfed over.

How to plan a garden project

The most common mistake people make is starting without a clear picture of what they want the finished garden to look like and how they want to use it. Before you get any quotes, spend a bit of time thinking through:

  • How do you actually use your garden? Eating outside, children playing, growing vegetables, sitting in the evening? The answer shapes everything.
  • What are the practical problems to solve? Poor drainage, a sloped site, a tired lawn, an ugly boundary, a lack of privacy?
  • What is your maintenance tolerance? Be honest here. A beautiful planting scheme that needs constant attention will become a source of stress rather than pleasure if gardening is not something you enjoy.
  • What is your budget? Have a realistic figure in mind. A good contractor will help you get the most value from it, but they need to know what they are working with.

You do not need detailed drawings or a professional garden design - a clear description of the problems you want to solve and what you want to be able to do in the garden is enough for a good contractor to give you a sensible quote and some practical ideas.

How much does garden landscaping cost in Surrey?

Landscaping is harder to give general price ranges for than patios or driveways because projects vary so much in scope. As a rough guide:

ProjectTypical price range
New turf (preparation and laying, per m2)£15 - £25 per m2
Composite decking (supply and install, per m2)£150 - £220 per m2
Raised beds (timber sleepers, supply and build)£400 - £900 per bed
Soakaway (standard residential)£600 - £1,800
Garden room (insulated, electrified)£12,000 - £25,000+
Full garden redesign (patio, lawn, fencing, planting)£8,000 - £25,000+

These are wide ranges because project scope and site conditions vary enormously. The only way to get an accurate figure is a site visit from someone who can see what the ground is actually like, what needs removing, and what the brief really involves.

Questions worth asking any landscaping contractor

  • Will you be on site yourself or are you managing subcontractors?
  • Can I see examples of similar projects and speak to previous customers?
  • Does the quote include waste removal and disposal?
  • What is your plan for protecting existing plants, lawn or paving during works?
  • Are you VAT registered and do you carry public liability insurance?
  • What does your guarantee cover and for how long?
