Block Paving Driveways in Surrey
The most popular driveway choice, durable, repairable, and available in dozens of patterns. GK Landscapes installs everything from sub-base to final seal.
Block Paving Done Properly
Block paving is the most popular driveway surface in the UK for good reason, it looks great, lasts for decades when installed correctly, and individual blocks can be replaced if damaged rather than patching the whole drive. It also adds more kerb appeal and resale value than any other driveway surface.
GK Landscapes installs the complete job: excavation, compacted MOT sub-base, edge restraints, laying in your chosen pattern, kiln-dried jointing sand, and sealing. We advise on channel drainage to meet planning requirements.
Laying Patterns
Herringbone (45° or 90°) is the strongest option, blocks interlock under load, preventing spreading. Best for driveways. Stretcher bond gives a clean, contemporary look. Basketweave suits period properties. Patrick advises on the best pattern for your property at the site visit.

The Installation Process
Remove existing surface and dig to 200–250mm depth, deeper where ground conditions require it.
Compact MOT Type 1 hardcore in layers. This is what keeps the drive level for 20+ years.
Concrete haunching along all edges prevents blocks spreading outward over time.
A 40–50mm layer of sharp sand is screeded level before block laying.
Blocks are laid in your chosen pattern and compacted with a plate vibrator.
Kiln-dried sand is brushed into joints and compacted. Sealing is applied if requested.
| Option | Typical Installed Price |
|---|---|
| Concrete block paving (standard) | £80–£120 per m² |
| Clay block paving (premium) | £100–£140 per m² |
| With channel drain | Add £50–£120 per linear metre |
Frequently Asked Questions
Block paving is not permeable, so a front driveway of over 5m² will need either planning permission or a drainage solution directing run-off to a garden or soakaway rather than the street. GK Landscapes sorts this at the site visit.
Kiln-dried jointing sand packed into the joints is the primary weed barrier. Sealing after installation locks the sand in and makes joints less hospitable to seeds. Re-sanding every 3–5 years as the sand erodes keeps joints full.
Block paving on a properly compacted sub-base typically lasts 25–40 years. The blocks themselves rarely fail, problems almost always result from an inadequate sub-base or edge restraints.
Yes, in-ground LED driveway lights can be incorporated during installation. These are routed under the blocks during laying. Much easier to install during the build than to add afterwards.
Sealing is optional but recommended. A quality block paving sealer locks jointing sand in place, prevents weed establishment, and gives the surface a clean, freshly-laid look that lasts. We use matt or satin finishes depending on preference.
