Panel Fencing

Panel Fencing in Surrey

An affordable, quick-to-install fencing option, popular for storm damage replacement and budget-conscious projects.

Fast, Affordable and Practical

Panel fencing uses pre-made panels, typically 1.8m wide, slotted between posts. It goes up quickly and is more affordable than close board fencing. For level gardens, swift storm damage replacement or where budget is the primary concern, it is a perfectly good choice.

GK Landscapes supplies and installs all the main panel types: waney lap (the most affordable), tongue-and-groove (more solid and durable), and slatted horizontal panels for a contemporary look. We advise honestly on which type suits your situation and whether close board would be a better long-term investment.

Panel Types

Waney lap panels, the most common and affordable. Overlapping horizontal boards. Lifespan 8–12 years. Tongue-and-groove, solid, no gaps, more durable than waney lap. Good privacy. Lifespan 12–18 years. Slatted panels, horizontal boards with gaps. Contemporary look. Less private but very popular in modern gardens.

Frequently Asked Questions

Waney lap panels typically last 8–12 years before warping, splitting and failing. Tongue-and-groove panels last 12–18 years. The posts usually outlast the panels if they are properly set. Panel replacement (re-using existing posts) is more affordable than a full fence replacement.

Panel fencing steps down a slope in fixed increments, each panel sits at a slightly lower level than the previous one, leaving a triangular gap beneath. This is not as tidy as close board fencing, which can follow the ground profile precisely. If your garden slopes significantly, close board is usually the better option.

Panel replacement on existing posts is a quick and affordable job. GK Landscapes can replace individual broken or blown panels, re-using existing posts where they are still sound. Call Patrick to discuss, not every fence problem needs a full replacement.

Standard fence panels are 1.8m wide and available in heights from 0.9m to 1.8m. Panels wider than 1.8m are not recommended, the longer the panel span, the more it flexes and the greater the wind load on the posts.

Solid panel fencing catches a significant amount of wind load. In exposed gardens, this puts considerable stress on the posts. Close board fencing on properly concreted posts handles wind exposure much better than panel fencing on spiked timber posts.
