How Much Does a New Patio Cost in 2026?

By Patrick Greenwood, GK Landscapes Surrey • 2026-06-11

This is the question I get asked most often, and the honest answer is that patio costs vary significantly depending on material, size, access, existing groundworks and where in Surrey you are. This guide gives you realistic numbers so you can plan properly before calling anyone for a quote.

Average Patio Costs in Surrey (2026)

These are installed prices, materials, labour, excavation, sub-base, laying and jointing:

  • Porcelain patio (small, up to 20m²): £3,000–£4,500
  • Porcelain patio (medium, 20–40m²): £4,500–£8,000
  • Indian sandstone (medium): £3,500–£6,500
  • Block paving patio: £3,000–£6,000
  • Cobble setts (feature areas): £4,000–£7,000

These figures reflect real Surrey project costs in 2026, including all groundworks. Budget patio quotes that seem significantly lower than these should be scrutinised, cutting corners on sub-base preparation is the most common cause of slabs sinking and pointing failing within a few years.

What Drives the Cost?

Material choice is the biggest variable. Porcelain and natural stone are premium materials with premium material costs. Block paving is typically cheaper per square metre but requires more labour for the laying pattern.

Size and shape matter significantly. Straight edges and rectangular patios are faster to lay than curved designs, features with steps, or L-shapes around obstacles.

Access and groundworks vary by property. A ground-floor rear garden with easy skip access costs less than a rear garden only accessible through a house or with difficult soil conditions.

Drainage adds cost if the garden has drainage problems or if a channel drain is needed to prevent water running against the house.

What Does a Good Quote Include?

A proper patio quote should itemise: site clearance and excavation, sub-base (typically MOT Type 1 hardcore), sand or mortar bed, material supply, laying, jointing, and any drainage. If a quote does not mention sub-base preparation, ask specifically, this is where corners get cut.

Is a Free Quote Worth Getting?

Always. A phone ballpark figure is not a quote, material prices vary, access conditions vary, and the only way to give an accurate price is to see the site. GK Landscapes offers free, no-obligation site visits across Surrey. We provide a written quotation after every visit.
