Porcelain & Natural Stone Patio Installation, Surrey

From large-format porcelain to classic Indian sandstone, GK Landscapes advises on the right material and installs it to a standard that lasts.

Porcelain vs Natural Stone: The Honest Comparison

Porcelain is the most popular choice today. Frost-resistant, stain-resistant and virtually maintenance-free. It comes in a huge range of colours and finishes, including realistic stone and wood-effect options. Large-format slabs (600×900mm or larger) give a contemporary, clean-line look that works well in modern Surrey gardens.

Indian sandstone is a natural product with warmth and character that porcelain cannot replicate. Each slab is different. It suits period properties, cottage gardens and anyone who wants a more traditional aesthetic. It requires sealing every 2–3 years to stay looking its best.

Slate is a premium option with a striking dark finish. Very durable and long-lasting when properly installed. Popular in contemporary garden designs.

Limestone sits between sandstone and porcelain, natural stone warmth but a more uniform, refined appearance. Available in creams, silvers and pale greys.

Frequently Asked Questions

No, this is one of its main advantages. Porcelain is non-porous so it does not absorb stains and does not need sealing. A jet wash once a year is all it needs to stay looking new.

Every 2–3 years with a quality impregnating sealer. You can tell it needs resealing when water stops beading on the surface. Unsealed sandstone will pick up stains and grow algae faster, particularly in shaded areas.

Porcelain can crack if it is not properly supported. This is why a full mortar bed is essential, spot-bedding leaves hollow areas that crack under foot traffic and furniture. GK Landscapes always lays on a full bed.

Large format slabs (600×600mm or bigger) give a clean, contemporary look with fewer joints. 600×900mm and 900×600mm are the most popular sizes. Smaller formats suit traditional and cottage garden styles.

Indian sandstone installed on a proper sub-base and maintained with regular sealing can last 20–30 years. Porcelain, with its superior density, can last even longer with virtually no maintenance.
